This Kapsul does not have an Introduction.
This virtual exhibition -- spanning across media, ranging from painting and sculpture to film, video art, and theatrical performance -- stems from the exhibition “The Last Days of Pompeii: Decadence, Apocalypse, Resurrection” appearing at the Getty Villa from September 12, 2012 to January 7, 2013, and the Cleveland Museum of Art from February 24 to July 7, 2013. We explore how the eruption of Vesuvius and discovery of Pompeii have been re-animated continuously in the modern imagination from the 1700s through today. Pompeii becomes a place for artists to project their own ideas onto the ancient city instead of functioning as a mere window onto the past.
While the museum exhibition will present works from the eighteenth century through today, this Kapsul is dedicated specifically to works of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. It includes a much larger array of works than space permitted for the physical exhibition would allow, and we encourage your own active contributions to the site. Ultimately, it offers a glimpse into what a far-reaching source of inspiration Pompeii has been over more than a century as artists have looked to the city of the dead as a means to reflect on their own situation.
