              About

This Kapsul does not have an Introduction.
A global perspective on comics kapsul asks the question, “What do comics mean to me?”

Through the merger of words and pictures the comic medium crosses national boundaries and shatters cultural barriers. Comics have a unique ability to entertain, educated, and enlighten; yet perhaps because of the medium's immense power, it is misunderstood. While every nation claims it own expression, distinct sub-genres dominate popular perceptions. We can all agree comics have grown in popularity and influence recently, yet it is a medium with an eclectic history that defies easy definition. We do not wrestle with the totality of the medium's complexity. Despite this, or perhaps because of it, a common view on the comic form eludes our vision. While “sequential art,” a term coined by comic legend Will Eisner, provides a technical definition, a broader meaning is harder to achieve. The difficulty linked to perception imposes an artificiality to our understanding. Because we cannot see, we limit the medium and ourselves. This kapsul addresses this problem enhancing understanding by employing our collective sight.
